The Pain Workgroup is a group of nurse leaders with expertise in pain and/or long term care, representing five John A. Hartford Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence, with the goal of addressing the gap in best practice tools, resources and products to assist nursing home staff to achieve the expectations of the process frameworks being developed by Campaign to Advance Excellence and to provide quality pain care in nursing homes. This initiative is part of the Center for Nursing Excellence in Long-Term Care™. 

Aim and Objectives of the Pain Workgroup

The aim of this project was to contribute to efforts to ensure that all older persons living in nursing homes receive high quality, patient-centered pain assessment and management care.

Objectives

  • Develop a collaborative of individuals, consultants and organizations to advance best practices for pain assessment and management.
  • Identify best practice assessment tools, user-friendly aids and resources to assist with implementation of Care Process Frameworks for better pain assessment and management.
  • Develop and disseminate best practice tools and resources to assist NHs implement best practices for pain management through an online resource.
